How do you choose a drone for the footage you plan to record?

Choose a camera drone for the way you intend to record, not simply for its maximum resolution. Person-tracking features matter for short shots, while low-light image quality and manual camera control matter in other situations. Before buying, decide where you will fly and what footage you want to produce.

Compare camera workflows

DJI Mini 5 Pro has a camera with a 1-inch type sensor and a gimbal that also supports vertical recording. DJI Flip stands out with a foldable design, propeller guards and features for recording the user. The catalogue also includes DJI Neo 2, which expands on the concept of a small drone for tracking shots.

Relate these differences to the footage you intend to create: travel videos, event coverage, corporate materials or site documentation. Propeller guards and obstacle-detection systems do not guarantee that collisions will be avoided. Every model has operating conditions and limitations specified by the manufacturer.

The kit includes more than the drone

  • Sterowanie: check which controller is included and whether it requires a phone.
  • Nagrywanie: compare imaging modes, file formats and recording options.
  • Energia: consider the number of batteries, the charging method and the energy reserve needed between shots.
  • Transport: check the bag, gimbal cover, spare propellers and contents of the specific package.

The maximum flight time in the specifications comes from a test under defined conditions. Wind, temperature, manoeuvres and your chosen energy reserve change the time available for recording. Do not plan a shot or the return flight on the assumption that you will always achieve the advertised figure.

Przygotowanie lotu w Polsce

Before buying and making your first flight, check the current requirements for the selected drone and planned operations in the Polish Civil Aviation Authority's materials. A small device cannot necessarily be flown anywhere. Airspace conditions and any restrictions must be assessed for each flight.

Useful resources include Polish CAA information on where you can fly and DroneTower described by PANSA. Also read the device instructions, recording rules and privacy guidance.

Do enquiry about choosing a drone include the type of shots you plan to take, the operator's experience and the budget for a complete kit. Compare the exact package variants, because the drone's name does not identify every included accessory.
