Orbbec Femto Bolt

Depth camera for your own applications and installations

Femto Bolt provides a colour image and a depth map for applications that analyse space or respond to movement. This camera is intended for integrators, programming labs and research teams that have their own software or plan to develop it. The choice of measurement mode depends on the distance, the size of the observed area and the required frame rate.

Choose the measurement area

The wide, unbinned WFOV mode covers 120° × 120° and provides a 1024 × 1024 depth map at 15 fps, with a range of 0.25 to 2.21 m. The narrower, unbinned NFOV mode offers 640 × 576 at 30 fps, a 75° × 65° field of view and a range of 0.5 to 3.86 m. This means balancing coverage, detail and measurement frequency. When designing the installation, choose the mounting location, then check whether the camera can capture the entire body or object from that position.

Combine imaging and motion

Femto Bolt uses iToF depth measurement. The separate RGB image has a resolution of up to 3840 × 2160 with HDR support, and the six-axis IMU provides inertial data on camera movement. Dedicated synchronisation connectors coordinate the operation of multiple devices. These streams can be used in your own vision system: for example, to combine the colour image with distance measurements for the observed scene. Data is sent to the computer via USB-C 3.2 Gen 1.

Prepare your application and computer

Access to the device is provided by Orbbec SDK. When migrating an application from Azure Kinect, you can use Orbbec SDK K4A Wrapper. The compatibility layer does not replace checking the drivers, operating system version and operation of your own software. Skeleton tracking requires a separate SDK or a compatible application; purchasing the camera does not provide a complete motion capture system. At the start of integration, preview the depth, colour, infrared and IMU streams in the manufacturer's tool. Only then test how your application responds.

Plan the installation and power supply

The housing measures 115.30 × 64.95 × 40.26 mm, and the device weighs 348 g. Allow space for the connectors and cable routing as well. The operating temperature range is 10–25°C; in an enclosed installation, account for the temperature immediately around the camera and keep the heat dissipation channel unobstructed. The camera uses an external power supply or a suitable USB-C connection for data and power. The manufacturer recommends connecting directly to the computer, without additional adapters or extension cables.

Frequently asked questions

Is Femto Bolt a ready-to-use motion capture system?

This camera requires a computer and software. Before purchasing, provide the name of the application you use, your operating system version and your intended motion capture method so the complete setup can be checked.

Does it reach 5.46 m in every mode?

No. The maximum range of 5.46 m applies to NFOV with binning. This setting must be considered together with its resolution and field of view, rather than combined with the specifications of another mode.

Can the camera be powered using a single USB cable?

Yes, via USB-C supporting simultaneous data transfer and sufficient power delivery. Before installation, check the full streams in the manufacturer's viewer using the intended port and cable. If the power supply is insufficient, an external power adapter is required.
